Pentecostals have reasoned that the disciples were “born again” after Christ’s resurrection but before the day of Pentecost. Their understanding is that when Jesus breathed on (emphusao) the disciples and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit” (John 20:20-23), this was the moment of their new birth. Accordingly, the Spirit now dwells in them. Pointing out the significance of Christ’s action by comparing Genesis 2:7 and 1 Corinthians 15:45, they are not impressed with what they perceive to be a lack of attention given by broarder Evangelicalism to John 20:22.
My article, The Apostle's experience, is a reply to this view specifically.
